Design and Analysis of Concrete Foundations for Wind Turbines

Through our collaboration with Boral we have provided the foundation system design and documentation for the design of wind turbine concrete foundation systems which is crucial for their stability and longevity. These foundations must withstand dynamic forces from wind loads, rotor vibrations, and the weight of the turbine. They are typically large and spread across a wide area to distribute loads evenly. The foundation is designed considering soil conditions, load-bearing capacity, and the turbine’s dimensions. Reinforced concrete is commonly used due to its durability and ability to handle compressive forces. To prevent thermal cracking during curing, engineers use measures like low-heat cement mix design, insulating blankets, and cooling pipes. Proper hydration and temperature monitoring during early curing stages ensure the concrete achieves full strength without cracking, ensuring the long-term performance of the wind turbine foundation.
